Steve, I realize that your " :-) VBG " indicates that your tongue was
far into your cheek when you wrote this, but what you said is accurate.
However you left out the first part of the story.  That's the part where
some illegal and uninvited immigrant priests from Spain settled in what
is now California, turned the docile native American tribes there into
abject slaves, lived in relative luxury on the backs of those slaves,
and then incorporated Alta California into Mexico -- which other
Spaniards had appropriated from the natives there, using basically the
same methods.
