[Dixielandjazz] Analogue to digital

Hello all

The quantity of material on this topic has been remarkable and I'd be
surprised if anyone who wants to transfer their LPs to CD hasn't been
enlightened.

BUT.

Very little has been said about quality. Assuming that you are starting
with relatively unworn and clean LPs, how good is the resulting CD? At the
risk of being called a hi-fi nut, I'd say "not so good" in many cases. The
weak links are the stylus and cartridge combination; the equalisation
circuitry of the phono pre-amplifier; and the analogue to digital circuitry
of the computer sound card or CD burner. You'll need to spend at least
$2000 on just these components to retrieve what lies in those treasured
grooves.

What's wrong with just playing the LPs?

I know, I know - "convenience", "cleaning up the plops and scratches", etc.
Quite so - but it comes at a price and the money and effort might be better
spent on buying CDs of music which we don't have.

All the best
Anton
