 It was Bowdler who "cleaned up" Shakespeare's work in the 19th century..... 
to make it less offensive, presumably to the archetypal Victorian, The word 
is probably less uncommon in the UK

Jude ( honourary "gentleman", addicted educator and about to be kicked off 
for two non OKOM postings in one day)  But Hell at least I'm not SHOUTING at 
anyone:-)
