I think Paul speaks eloquently about why most of us play -- it's more
trouble than it's worth, yet there we are, playing our best. Here's what I
wrote him:
"Amen, Amen, and Amen. Brother, you nailed that perfectly.
The best compliment I think I have ever had was while sitting with a
frequent patron who said in a thoughtful kind of way "If this were the 30's,
you'd BE somebody .... a known player in the business, someone who has been
in several bands & might be recommended if a band needed a player."
I'm not the best there is, just someone who tries hard to play well, to act
professional, to play to the crowd. How many of the steady players of the
past had to be master showmen - or master hustlers - to work?"
