[Dixielandjazz] Hooking Cows

In the late 1800's the "hooking cow" was a lady who considered herself
superior and thus eminently qualified to govern the towns "Society."  Those
familiar with herds of cattle
well know that each herd has a matriarch or lead cow. This is not a
hereditary position but is the product of energetic application of her horns
or, in rare cases, her muley-headed head, until the herd has accepted her
right to leadership. Same thing applied to ladies of that time period.
