One substitutes "people" for "darkies" and it becomes pretty benign.

Agreed, Ron. It's just so easy to change the bit you think is not correct.
I've been doing it for years. An example is Basin Street Blues......" is
the street, where all the black folks used to meet"....all you gotta do is
leave out the word "black". And, believe me, none of our Spanish audience
objects to whatever I say, but I just decide on these things for myself.
