You might politely indicate to your college music director that he (or she)  
should be ashamed of him (or her) self. Scott Joplin, creator of the Maple 
Leaf  Rag and the so-called classic ragtime style, was a coronet player and  
transcribed all of his rags into band music in a publication called the Red  and  
Black Book.I'm certain you will be swamped with listmates telling you  more 
about Scott and the genre for horn playing.
