Yep, that sounds like the Frank Haggerty I
heard snippets about when interviewing members of
the Sons of Champlin rock band while trying to
freelance an article to Rolling Stone for their
10th Anniversary of the Summer of Love issue.
Frank's son, Terry, reportedly had learned an
awful lot from his dad, and for a while
challenged any amp company to come up with an amp
that could accurately reproduce his fast playing.

The Sons were an interesting band for a SF
rock band, featuring horns and sometimes even
vibes (as in vibraphone, not as in good vibes).
They were kind of precursors of Blood Sweat &
Tears and Chicago, with whom their leader Bill
Champlin played later on, and nmaybe still does
for all I know. Not sure what Terry's up to now
but I seem to recall that he had gone in more of
a jazz direction in recent years. The Sons have
played some reunion gigs recently but I heard
Terry was not with them.
