>From the Stan Kenton Chat List, this book review should appeal to some of
our DJML big band fans.

For those of you who have not heard of it, the Peter Levinson book
on "Tommy Dorsey...Living In A Great Big Way"..Da Capo Press I found to
be fascinating. I knew Tommy and Jimmy and a lot of people Levinson
interviewed for the book. It's about Tommy and Jimmy of course, but to
a great degree on how the whole "name big band" thing came to be and
ended. Booking agents, ballrooms, hotel rooms, travel, radio broadcasts
both remote and sponsored, publicity reps, etc. Stan is even mentioned
twice..once on how "Artistry In Rhythm" came to be. I did pick up a
couple of mistakes..one for instance.. "Sentimental Over You.." going
up to a C when any trombone player will tell you it is a C#. But
overall, really worthwhile reading. Levinson also did one on Harry
James and Nelson Riddle
