Dear Bruce,
"Big Time Woman (From Way Out West)" composed by Wilton Crawley, was
recorded for Victor on 3 June 1930 by Wilton Crawley and his Orchestra with
Crawley, cl; Henry Allen, t; Charlie Holmes, as; Jelly Roll Morton, p; Teddy
Bunn, g; Bruce Johnson, wb.
It is generally available, as it has been reissued variously over the years
on LP and CD. It is currently available in the indispensable Jazz Oracle CD
catalogue (8020).
It is a basic tune, easily learnt from record which also has Crawley's well
enunciated vocal lyrics.
Wilton Crawley was a vaudevile entertainer who played clarinet in what has
become known as the 'gaspipe' style (think Ted Lewis, Boyd Senter and Fess
Williams).
I love it, because it is of the period.
However, newcomers usually find it a bit strange on first hearing.
Kind regards,
Bill.
