Ah, but quoting does not mean that you must quote someone else's work
verbatim. One can use a melody that fits and interpret it as you wish.

So stay away from it and do your own thing!
E.g: I'm able to copy Armstrong solo's and intro's,
but will alway refuse to do so. I know my improvisations
are not as good, but the're mine! And that is what jazz is
all about. I want to be a creative jazz musician, not a
copyer. If I don't succeed, so be it. It will add to the
glory of the really great ones.
On the other hand: when the audience likes it, in
an entertainment point of view.....life is difficult.
