Back in the 1940s, 50s the first bar or two of "The Lady in Red" became a
popular quote among both OKOM and Bop musicians, at least in the NYC area.

It was quoted when ever a pretty and/or sexy lady was spotted by the soloing
musician. The horn would be pointed at the object d'art and the quote would
spill out. And the guys in the band would check her out. If you have live
recordings from club dates of soloist oriented bands, you might well be able
to pick out the quote here and there.

Like the first few bars of Picou's chorus of "High Society", "The Lady in
Red" quote is on several of Charlie Parker's live recordings.

Its lyrics, popularity, and ease of fitting it into almost any chord
sequence, account for why the tune was chosen for a "code" quote

Cheers,
Steve
