[Dixielandjazz] young Musicians

I concur. I attended the festival and the Sunday meeting at the Dante Club,
and was mesmerized by this singer. And I am predisposed to disliking
singers. She reminds me quite a bit of Nina Ferro. I'd keep an eye out for
her.

Listmate Dave Robinson has done a great job with this group which, on the
whole, completely captivated everyone who heard them. They got a standing
ovation at our Sunday session, which is not easy to do. It's not that the
chairs are comfortable, but a certain amount of inertia sets in when one
achieves one's physical maturity. The group represents, I think, what some
of us are trying to accomplish in developing future generations of
traditional (and other) jazz musicians.

Dave Robinson is working to get traditional jazz established as part of the
music curriculum in schools, and there are many reasons to support this
effort. Besides developing interest in the kind of music WE like, it just
makes sense to teach jazz along the historical timeline in which it
developed. If you want kids to grok "Giant Steps," it seems they should
first have a firm grounding in "Bill Bailey," ness paw?

The website for Dave's project is http://www.prjc.org/tjen/. Give it a
look-see.

The Trad Jazz Youth Festival, while not perfect, went very well from what I
could see. We are all very excited about the potential for this and similar
efforts next year and in the future. They will only get better.

I did not get a chance to attend the first annual Youth Trad Jazz Festival
in Sacramento on Sat as I had a gig. however, from talking to several of
the judges & clinicians, I understand that it was a roaring success.

Today at the STJS monthly Jazz Sunday, 3 youth bands performed, the band
from NC, Capital Focus from WA DC & our own STJS sponsored TNT (The New
Traditionalists).

I heard today, for the first time, a wonderful girl singer from the Capital
Focus JB. She is 19. I have never heard a teen-ager sing with the poise,
phrasing & professionalism as this one. She absolutely knocked me & the
rest of the crowd out.

She came over to my gig after the meeting & sang some more. I cannot say
enough about her. She is going to be a force to be reckoned with. And she
is about the nicest teen-ager I have ever met.

What a gem!
 Her name is Lena Seikaly.
