...and since my buddy Steve is backing me up, I'll back him up too.
He know exactly of what he speaks. I graduated from Rowan, and I
worked 14 years at Showboat.
Rowan has one of the premier Music Departments from Baltimore to NYC.
When the great choir conductor Robert Paige left Temple U after many
years, where did he choose to teach? Rowan.
When Denis DiBlasio left Maynard Ferguson, where did he choose to
teach? Rowan.
When George Rabbai left Woody Herman, where did he choose to teach?
Rowan.
When Lt. Commander John Pastin retired from Conducting the United
States Navy Concert Band and 30 years of military service, where did
he choose to teach? Rowan.
The Associate Conductor of the prestigious Pennsylvania Ballet,
Salvatore Scarpa, conducts the Rowan Symphony Orchestra, is the
former 1st trombone for Paul Anka's Orchestra, winner of the Downbeat
magazine award for Best New Jazz Composition, and the conductor of
the world class Atlantic Brass Band, artists-in-residence at Rowan.
Just a few of the very talented faculty.
Oh, and did I mention that Congressman Dick Gephart's brother Don is
the Dean of Fine and Performing Arts?
If you know of young students looking for a place to study music,
suggest they check out Rowan. It's worth a look.

Anybody who is a music fan and lives within 100 miles of Rowan
University
knows where it is. In Philadelphia, all the folks who might like to hear
that New Orleans Music know about Rowan (Formerly Glassboro College)
They
have a very strong Music Department.
But what you may not know is that the band there, on Feb 8 mentioned
in the
release is the "Showboat Casino Band" minus me.
Bob Rawlins, PhD (Music), the reed man mentioned in the band
performing at
Rowan, is also the Chairman of the Music Department there and first
call sub
at the Showboat when I can't make the gig.
The gig is part of a "black History" month of musical performances at
Rowan
and the evening is dedicated to New Orleans Jazz.
For those who know where Rowan is, that performance will swing its
ass off.
The real message, perhaps, is that OKOM thrives here in the Philadelphia
area because of University's like Rowan, or Pennsylvania, or West
Chester,
or Delaware, etc., etc.., etc. actively present OKOM all year long.
Could it be that we have all the "excellent" music teachers here?
Nah, just
a lot of working jazz musicians.
Cheers,
Steve Barbone
