> Louis Armstrong (tp), Lil Hardin or Earl Hines (p), Jimmie Rogers (vcl).
Hollywood, July 16, 1930
Blue Yodel No.9 First on Victor 23580. CD: Retrieval RTR79020.
There is no second title, maybe there were two takes?<
Dear Gerard and Rae-Ann,
"Blue Yodel No. 9 (Standin' On The Corner)" was the only title made on that
day by Jimmie Rodgers, but they did cut 3 masters of it.
Take -2 was the one selected for release.
The preceding matrix was "Hooray For Baby and Me" by Ted Fiorito & His Orch
from the previous day.
The Rodgers/Armstrong song was followed the same day (16 July 1930) with two
songs by singer Grace Hayes. Who?
The experts have yet to completely agree if Lil Hardin-Armstrong was the
pianist on the Rodgers song.
My ears tell me that it was Lil Armstrong, who was in Hollywood at the time.
[A recent Rodgers' researcher claims to have found a note in Rodgers'
personal papers thanking 'Miss Lil'.]
It should also be noted that Louis' name did not appear on the label of the
original Rodgers' disc and it was only keen-eared collectors who discovered
his presence. Louis was in Culver City on his first visit there for an
engagement at Sebastian's Cotton Club.
The claim for Earl Hines was demolished years ago, but some still insist
that the pianist was probably Harvey Brooks (or LZ Cooper) both of whom were
with Louis orch at that time.
As usual, more than you needed to know.
Kind regards,
Bill.
