Dan's tongue-in-cheek instructions for school band directors (and others)
are right on.

One of the best audience reactions I ever got was using a small ensemble to
play a Dixie version (is there any other?) of "Five Feet Two" while the school
dance ensemble did the Charleston to the music. Yeah, they read the music.
Never mind the many hours we practiced the "Unfinished Symphony" which drew
only polite applause.

A recent high school concert here brought the house down, when the band
director had a dozen members play a "symphony" on a dozen upended metal garbage
barrels, complete with black lights, special sticks., and funky costumes

Yes, they want to be entertained.

Ted
