Such a loss. I attended a Ferguson concert in Ridgefield, CT on April 29 and he and his group of youngsters were superb. Knowing of Ferguson's playing with Stan Kenton at the birth of "modern jazz", I was fearful of the "I can play higher and shriller than you can" syndrome. While he did hit some spectacularly high notes, he and his group played some wonderful music, most of it without any specific genre His sense of humor was delightful especially in chiding his sidemen, some of whom appeared to be shy of 20.
A great musician will be missed.
