Larry Walton writes about Jerry Van Dyke playing the banjo:

I don't think Jerry Van Dyke played 5 string.  He played plectrum.

Now Steve Martin played (and still plays) the 5 string and is very good at 
it. Could it be that Larry has confused Steve Martin with Jerry Van Dyke?
