Re: best definition of jazz
Background: there was a post on DJML "Why Americans Hate Jazz" by a
Japanese man explaining how most Americans don't listen to the music, only
the vocals. I posted it on a list to some musicians and serious jazzfans.
Jazz pianist and retired advertising executive Ed Butler responded by
offering $100 for the best definition of jazz. Deadline August 20. His
address is below. Please reply directly to him. I'd appreciate being
copied as I want to be in on the fun!
Thanks.
Norman (whatever your definition of jazz, I still love you) Vickers

why Americans hate jazz- Bill Campbell
Listen up, folks..AMERICANS DON'T HATE JAZZ !!! To hate
something you've got to know what you're
hating. The American public does not know what jazz is..because
purveyors of the term "jazz" keep
confusing them !!!! You're in a strange city. In the evening,
you walk around to find some music. You see
a sign that says: "JAZZ CLUB". You don't know if it's a
Dixieland club, guys playing souped-up versions of
established standards, "Smooth Jazz", which in some cases is
just one notch above Rapp, or just what
they're passing off as "Jazz"
WHAT QUALIFIES A MUSICAL PIECE AS "JAZZ:"? We all need to agree
on a definitive answer.
Sooooooooo....I am willing to pay $100 to the author of the best
definitive answer to:
'WHAT MAKES JAZZ JAZZ ?"
My email address is ed at pensacolabeach.com , Norm, please send this email to
everyone
on our list. Everyone needs a shot. Then we can put this issue
to rest. Deadline is August 20th.
Please keep your answer to 100 words or less. Thanks
Ed Butler

Retired Air Force officer Bill Campbell of Ft. Walton Beach, FL has been a
journalist both in service and since he left USAF. He's been a good friend
of the Jazz Society of Pensacola in its 23 year history. He writes:

Somewhere I have a tape from the Mount Hood Jazz Festival which I covered
for "Jazz Times." Think I got $35 for the article, but I did get two
backstage passes.
The festival was held in a Jr. College football stadium. "Infield" tickets
were an outrageous $25, with seats in the stadium about $15. It was packed.
In one weekend I saw Nancy Wilson, Ella, MJQ, Ray Brown Trio, Oregon with
Ralph Towner, Ramsey, JJ Johnson, David Benoit, and a bunch of sig others.
Oh, Manhattan Transfer, who wouldn't give interviews. F'um....
I interviewed Ella, Ramsey and JJ about what they were doing to let African
American kids know this was their music. Only Ramsey had a program. I'll try
to find the tape and send it on to you........
The funny thing, and something you won't appreciate unless you understand
the state of Oregon, is that the local Chamber of Commerce who sponsored it,
was pissed at me because I was now going to let "outsiders" know that it
was, indeed, the greatest jazz festival in the world.
Sanborn and Botti headlined it this year, which is quite a step down from
the greats I saw that year.
