JAZZ CAMP CONCERTS
YOUTH: Sat., Aug. 5th at the Dante Club, NOON - 4:30 p.m., $5 donation.
Featuring: 2006 Camp Bands plus Faculty Trad & Swing Bands starring Rusty
Stiers, Terry Myers, Anita Thomas, Greg Varlotta, Bill Dendle, Bob Phillips,

MOLLY RINGWALD IS "SWEET CHARITY"
Molly Ringwald, daughter of Bob Ringwald, will be starring in the Broadway
touring company of "Sweet Charity" at the Sacramento Convention Center.
Barbara Paulus has reserved 150 seats in the first balcony for a group from
STJS to attend a 2:00 p.m. matinee on Sun., Nov. 5, 2006. Tickets are
$58.50 each. 125 of them are already spoken for, so write Barbara ASAP.

STJS is primarily a volunteer organization. There are openings for

For the Trad. Jazz Youth Band Festival on Feb. 10th, we need a few more
sub-committee chairpersons to plan festival set-up/tear-down and to solicit
$50 business card ads for the printed program.

Brain Teaser:
Q: Perhaps the greatest trombone player in the early years of Jazz was a
musician from New Orleans nicknamed ___ ___. Before picking up a trombone,
he originally played _____. He developed the "________" style of playing the
trombone in which the trombone plays a rhythmic line underneath the trumpets
and cornets. In 1919, he moved to California and assembled a group of New
Orleans musicians into a band called Kid Ory's ______ Orchestra, which
became the first African-American jazz band from New Orleans to record.
During the Depression, he ran a _______ ranch with his brother but
eventually revived Kid Ory's Creole Orchestra and continued to play, tour
and record Jazz until he retired in 1966.
