We've all heard, many times, the :Bugle Call Rag" attributed to
Pettis, Meyers & Schoebel. A long time ago reading Gunther Schuler's
"Eary Jazz" (I believe) I was interested to see that Eubie Blake had
written a tune of the same title, but the only recording listed had
been the Sousa band. I never found a copy of that.
Recently, while scouring the net I found a site (in Maryland???)
with a bunch of scanned in manuscripts by Eubie and I downloaded them
One was an arrangement of this tune - hand written- for a clarinet and
strings small group - odd choice for a tune of this name. The lead seems
to be for clarinet as I could find no cornet part anywhere. Also, the clarinet
part is marked as "solo" for the first part and appears to continue with
what seems to be a melody. THe handwriting is very difficult to read and
most is above the treble staff with the number of lines - or even existence
of lines frequently in question. "dotted eighths" are figured out by
ESP + arithmetic, as eye sight can not cut itl
Is anyone aware of any other sheet music for this song? Or the
availability of copy of the Sousa recording?
I'm not sure the tune is even worth the effort I've put in so far
--- however, my curiousity got to me. and
I now have what I think is the clarinet part in "Sibelius" and
printable as a pdf --- I am now cross-eyed as a result..
