Dear David,
An off-the-cuff reply pending a further and more detailed investigation of
your query.
"Hindustan" the tune was introduced to Australian jazz bands via the Bob
Crosby Bob Cats' Decca 78 (6 Feb 1939) which was released here in 1943-44.
It immediately became an essential disc in all local jazz record
collections.
Of lesser importance (in those days), was the Artie Shaw rendition (20 Jan
1942) issued in Australia by HMV in 1946 .
When I first started listening to the Graeme Bell Dixieland Band, in
Melbourne in 1945, "Hindustan" was already part of its popular repertoire.
The song is still trotted out regularly here by most trad bands, including
our own.
Kind regards,
Bill.
