 From the Lissauer encyclopedia:

w. Mort Dixon, m. Harry Woods, 1931. Featured and recorded by Kate Smith
(Velvetone), Phil Harris (Victor), Art Jarrett with vocal with Jimmie
Noone's band (Brunswick), Paul Robeson (Victor), Singin' Sam, the Barbasol
Man (Conqueror), Erno Rapee and his Orchestra (Hit of the Week). The song
received additional popularity with the pantomime performance of Jimmy Savo
in his one-man revue "Mum's the Word." Savo made it a highlight of his
vaudeville and nightclub act.
