[Dixielandjazz] Dixieland4Dixieland

HI
I am a bit of a lurker and my last post didn't seem to make it.

I am organizing with our local Red Cross of Canada a benefit
I have called "Dixieland4Dixieland"

They are accepting donations and I hope this will increase the visibility.
There are a lot of Dixieland Jazz bands..If we all "Dixie4 Dixie"
we can help.

Forgive my ignorance (I'm Canadian eh!)but I am assuming Neww Orleans is
in "Dixieland"

So please use my idea if you like it and get something going.

In Holland this old French song became "Kortjakje", a chilren song.It is
still popular today. In Belgium, when I was a kid, it became a children
song, partly in Flemish, partly in French, about a little dog that was
lost "Hebde nie gezien, n'avez vous pas vu"

The interesting thing is that it arrived in New Orleans too. Kid Ory
recorded it as "Creole Bobo" and sang it in Creole French. The melody is
slightly different, but it obviously came from the same source. It's
fascinating how some songs really travel all over the world!

There are other examples. One I recently discovered was on a Frankie
Laine record. It was sung in duet with Doris Day and the title was
"Sugarbush", clearly the same as the South African song "Suikerbossie".
The amazing thing was that as an intermezzo between choruses of
"Sugarbush" a song appeared that exists as a folk-song in my country
called "We gaan nog niet naar huis" (We are not going home yet). It's a
small world!

Dearest Jazzfan,

On Wednesday 11 May '05 The Dutch Swing College Band, the oldest established
jazzband in the world, celebrated its 60th anniversary by giving a grand
jubilee concert in The Hague.
The event was most notable for the exciting co-operation of trad jazz
celebrities such as Mr.Acker Bilk, Kenny Ball, and Papa Bue.
This remarkable evening of unforgettable trad jazz and its most prominent
icons was also the launching platform for two new fascinating DSCB items.

1. "The Swing Code", the band's latest CD ( featuring Mr. Acker Bilk, Kenny
Ball, Papa Bue and Chris Barber ).

2. "The Story", ( 60 Years of Dutch Swing College Band ) , the first DVD
presenting the band and its illustrious history, to hit the international
market.

You can find more information concerning the band and how to order the CD
and/or DVD on our website : http://www.dscband.nl

One of my favorite Big Tea songs is "One Hindered Years from Today." A
nice tie in, I think for Jack's centennial. The gist of the song is
essentially no one will remember what happens 100 years from today. In
Tea's case, they certainly would, were this song written a century ago.

Wouldn't it be great if all the jazz clubs could plan events using New
Orleans musicians? They don't have a gig for 3-6 months and could certainly
use the money. Hopefully, they all took their instruments when they
evacuated!

Wow: Sorry I did not read that into your post Bob, Now I am shaking my
head!
But then again rockers are known to be a bit nuts and always trying to
be on the cutting edge.
We must also remember that there is yet another generation out there
that never saw a turntable :)) so what was old will eventually be
rediscovered again. The idea may have come from the current rage of
DJ's and their turntable scratching of records. Such desecration of
recordings should not go unpunished, I prescribe three smacks on their
pee pees with a large Rubber mallet. That ought to each those young
whipper snappers not to mess with real music. :))

Cheers,

Tom Wiggins

I imagine what you heard was a reproduction of a Cd recording off of a
bad vinyl recording if you heard ticks and pops, and a needle hitting
the track, because you don't get that with lazer technology, so the
person who mastered it probably just made a bad copy of a bad record
onto a CD and then reproduced them to sell them as CDs.

 Tom,

No, it was done on purpose. My daughter told me that some bands are
putting these sounds on their digital recordings on purpose to make
them sound like LPs on turntables. It is the "new thing..."

That is why I was shaking my head.

Just wondering if anyone has heard from George Buck of Jazzology

only a couple of blocks from the river.

Would it be possible for us to set up a series of concerts all over the
country/world to raise funds. I wonder if the New Orleans Musician's Union
would be able to disperse such funds. Dick Broadie

 Hi Dick and All:

Yes it is possible for us to set up a massive series of fundraising
activities to assist all of which would be appreciated, but let us all
sit back take a deep breath and understand the magnitude of this
terrible disaster before we run off half cocked albeit well intentioned.

There will be numerous organizations and fund raisers jumping on the
band wagon and collecting monies to be allegedly dispersed to those in
need. we should all be aware from the not to distant experience of the
911 situation how easily millions of well intended dollars were
diverted to bureaucratic salaries etc. with even the major
Organizations like the Red Cross.

The Musicians Union has long been proven to be inept at best, and the
musicians that will be affected the most by this tragedy are probably
not even members of the union anyway. Let us be smarter than that and
not piss money down any proven rat holes.
Any business or organization in New Orleans for all practical reasons
is effectively OUT OF BUSINESS. They have not electricity, no phones,
no television, no banks open. no access to money, no mail delivery etc.
etc. Life as we all know and enjoy it is for the time being over in
New Orleans folks. Hopefully many of our friends and musos did indeed
escape and are safe. Some however simply are not that smart or lucky.
The full shock of this situation is yet to come.

This is a most tragic situation that will touch all of us on this list
much deeper than most of the world, so we should think about it for a
moment before jumping off into well meaning ventures to raise a couple
of hundred bucks. Let us put our collective heads together and
enormous talents and energy to do something that will show the support
world wide of OKOM and raise some real money to help those Musicians
specifically that are probably in the best case scenario currently
homeless. They will also face many months of lost gigs, so it is in
our best interest to try and coordinate employment situations for as
many displaced New Orleans Musicians as possible.

This situation is our equivilant of the Tsunami situation of last Dec.

Let us be at least smart enough to use this unfortunate situation to
further the image and preservation and cause of OKOM while supporting
our very needy brothers and sisters in the musical community that WE
ALL CLAIM TO ADORE AND REVERE.

Why not organize a Nationwide Festival tour of the best of the best and
use all of the local supporting acts in each market to have some super
OKOM events and get the long overdue media coverage and pump up the
image of OKOM to National attention.

In other words folks lets back up a minute and look at the big picture
and make it work for all of us. We can all help of course but let's
do it correctly and make it work much more effectively and really do
some good instead of just feeling good about it.

I have already been contacted by several musicians in groups in the San
Francisco bay area willing to help raise money for these musos and
these folks are not even OKOM musicians. They have even asked for
donations of rooms to house displaced players till they can get it
together to move on etc. This is a very real tragedy folks much
bigger than most of us can even imagine.

Think about it and I welcome all ideas and trust me I am already
working on situations to help organize concerts and events with all my
Big Name star friends and former clients in this industry to come
together and raise some real money. This is no easy task to coordinate
but if we all go slowly we can do it and make a real difference and
actually help some folks who will other wise simply fall through the
cracks. Our best endeavor is to tighten our ranks and support our OWN
rather than blindly throw money at organizations because they are on
the "A" list for receiving funding.

cheers,

Tom Wiggins

Dear Bill:
Well, you are not alone in that profession among OKOM musicians.
Examples are:
* The late John DeFauw, guitarist, architecural designer of restaurants
and founder of original Jazz At Noon in Chicago.
* The late Frank Powers, clarinetist of Cincinnati, member of Boll
Weavil Jazz Band and others, practicing architect and grad.of Univ of MI
school of architecture.
* Allan Fredericksen, trombonist and only known survivor of Gumperson's
Disease (ask him) and original leader of Denver's Queen City Jazz Band
and promoter of Jazz fests in Colorado.
I am sure there are others -- and do you still have a slide rule? Note

Glad to hear that Connie and wife are safe. And glad for the others
mentioned. Anybody had any word on Geroge Buck, his place and the Jazz
Museum. We can only hope all of these people survive as well.

With JIM FRYER (USA)

8 September 2005 - Clevedon Jazz Club

With Jeremy Huggett's Band of Gold at the Club's regular Walton Park Hotel
venue on Thursday 8 September, will be the Club's second guest trombonist
from the USA in 2005.

Jim Fryer began his professional career at age 16 in the Boston area. In the
three decades since, he has toured internationally many times, recorded on
dozens of occasions and played television, radio, theatres and concert halls
in a variety of musical settings. He is the co-leader of the Fryer-Barnhart
International All-Stars and is also a member of the Titan Hot Seven.

Since his first tour in 1988, Jim has returned regularly to the United
Kingdom. He has performed as a featured soloist at many of the most
prominent festivals in the UK and Ireland, including Edinburgh, Brecon,
Cork, Bude and Keswick.

In his home state of Connecticut, he keeps a very busy professional
schedule, performing throughout New England and New York City area. He has
played with many notables such as Ed Polcer, Peter Ecklund, Doc Cheatham,
Kenny Davern, Butch Thompson, Slide Hampton, Rosemary Clooney, Dave Brubeck
and Aretha Franklin.

As well as being an exceptional jazz trombonist covering many eras of jazz
styles, his talents also include jazz cornet, euphonium, tuba and vocals.

Jim has worked with Band of Gold on three occasions at Keswick and Bude Jazz
festivals. This mini tour of the South West was instigated by Jim himself as
he enjoys playing with the band so much a direct quote being that they are
awesome!

The CD of the bands of the listees and also the fundraising concert is a
great idea. If there is someone who organizes it, I'd be happy to
contribute a number or two on behalf of my Bohem Ragtime Jazz Band. I
have been also thinking of collecting money probably at a concert or
other fundraising event but as Berry Zand Scholten pointed out probably
many in Europe would think that there is no need for help as the US is
rich and big and will solve the problem itself. Thus I think it would be
easier to get people involved in the idea here if we name persons
(preferably jazz musicians) who we collect the money for. I suppose that
most of them have lost lots of things and not everything will be covered
by the insurance companies (if the musicians had insurance at all). So
if someone could come up with a list of musicians or a N.O. musicians
trade union or a list of jazz organizations, jazz clubs, record
companies and yes, the great jazz collections (!) that could be aimed.
Yes, of course, we could collect and send money to the Red Cross but, as
I said, if I start anything like this here in Hungary, it would be
easier to name the targeted persons or organizations. For example, Steve
Pistorius was here at our Festival in 1994 (as far as I know, he still
lives down in Metairie) therefore people remember him but have no idea
who, let's say, Pat Cooke is. So if anyone has contact info for Steve
(and news about him) and/or any other musicians, organizations please,
post it on the list. I know, it's difficult as there is no phones, no
Emails, no Internet servers function and everybody stays here and there.
Thanks,

Tamas
