CHRIS WALKER SWINGTET - 27 October 2005 - Clevedon Jazz Club

An old friend of Clevedon Jazz Club returns to entertain at the Club's Walton Park venue on Thursday 27th October - The Chris Walker Swingtet.

Chris formed his first 'Quintet' in 1987 following a 'one-off' Sunday lunchtime session for the Southampton Jazz Society. The original line up of clarinet or saxophone with piano, bass and drums and a vibraphone is a well established formula and it gave the band the opportunity to explore, and play, much loved tunes from the swing era of the 1930's and 40,s.

In 1999 a guitar replaced the vibraphone and the band became 'The Chris Walker Swingtet'. The present band continues the tradition of playing the great music from the jazz era of the 1920's to the small group swing tunes associated with the mid twentieth century and are equally at home on Cruise liners as they are appearing in their own right, or backing the top jazz stars, in Pubs, Clubs and Festivals throughout the UK.

The popularity of the band is primarily due to having a 'sound' that is placed firmly in the 'middle ground' that is not 'Traditional' nor 'Modern. Put simply it is their ability to play popular, melodic tunes that are all time favourites. Their repertoire covers the music of the small groups from New Orleans and Chicago in the 1920's, through the New York scene of the early 1930's, and its natural development the "Swing Era" which lasted up until the 1950's

Chris is also well known and respected as a jazz broadcaster and journalist. He produces and presents his own weekly radio programmes on BBC local radio stations in the Solent area.

The doors at Clevedon Jazz Club's Walton Park Hotel venue open at 8pm, the music starts at 8.30pm and its £7 'on the door'.
