How did Moten's "South" come into the standard Dixieland repertoire?

Rust (4th ed.) has only 5 entries. The Onyx Club band recorded it in 1935,
and Anderson says the lyrics were written in 1936--was there a particular
occasion in the mid-30s that might have caused sheet music to be (re)printed?

My database catalogs show that Watters recorded it in '44, Kid Ory in '46,
FF2 during its Good Time Jazz days, Murphy sometime in there. So did it
come out of the New Orleans Revival, the West Coast or did the Condonites
play/record it much?

Thanks.
