Steve Allen was a good jazz pianist, played clubs in the LA area, recorded, wrote some good jazz-oriented music, was a staunch supporter of jazz on television, was a close friend of Gus Bivona and his groups. The people I listed below were not only musicians, they were composers, arrangers, singers, band leaders -- I would have expected you to question somebody like Ted Lewis who was a lousy clarinet player but a great supporter of cats like Benny Goodman and Muggsy Spanier. The jazz world is very, very large and involves many disciplines. Hey, two of the best around right now are Woody Allen and Bob Altman for providing giant support for jazz-oriented movies and movie backgrounds.
