[Dixielandjazz] Why postings to DJML get delayed

Hello listmates,
Of late, there has been an increase in the number of
postings that get held for moderation. A moderator
(usually me) has to manually release the posting.
Several reasons can cause your posting to be held, and
none of them have to do with our opinion of your
prose!
The number one reason that your posting doesn't make
it right away is that you posted from the wrong
address. To prevent spam, the list software allows
postings through only if they originate from a
subscribed address. Many subscribers have clever
email addresses, like "IvoryFats at StridePiano.com"
which allows people to remember them more easily.
However, they're often using email forwarding, which
means some other bit of software receives the email at
"IvoryFats at StridePiano.com" and forwards it to
"Antonio.g.Bourisakalious at thisisafakeISP.co.uk". In
this example, listmate Antonio will still attempt to
post from
"antonio.g.bourisakalious at thisisafakeISP.co.uk", and
the list software puts it on hold. The software only
knows antonio as the aforementioned "IvoryFats".
If the held queue is huge, I get sloppy and some of
you will see your email bounce. Boy, are you
surprised when your inbox has a DJML digest received
ten seconds before a bounce message that says "only
subsribers may post".
If you have multiple email addresses, you might
consider subscribing under all of them, and put
yourself on vacation hold for all but one of them.
This way, you can post from any number of email
addresses, but you'll receive the DJML at only one
address.
The second most common reason that postings get held
is called "indirect addressing". If you put the DJML
address in the cc: or bcc: line when you send the
email, then the DJML software will hold the posting.
The third most common reason is size. 50kb is the
maximum size that the software allows through. If
your email is pure text, you're unlikely to exceed
this value. If you include any sort of attachment,
then you probably will exceed this value. The DJML
software, in general, rejects attachments.
All of these restrictions are in place to reduce spam
making it to the list and the spread of the various
pestilences that clever-but-unfriendly software
writers occasionally like to produce.
If you have any questions or want some help, you may
direct your inquiries to myself or Bob The ListMom
Ringwald, who is the final arbiter on how the list is
conducted.
With respect to all those who can rightfully call
themselves musicians, I am respectfully yours,
