I, too, used to rotate the needle 1/3, for a total of three plays.  I 
had forgotten!

(FYI:  I'm only 40.  My brother, good brother that he is, gave me a 
rebuilt, wartime-model windup for my 12th b-day.  It didn't take a 
rocket scientist to SEE that there was a flat spot on the needle after 
only one play.  PLUS, the black powder at the tip!  Sheesh!),
