OK youse Guys !
There will be a very Big surprise new venue at Sacramento Jazz Jubilee this
year, unfortunately it has nothing to do with Jubilee.
It is Fundraising time again for the "Jazz For Kids Program" a non profit
organization taking traditional Jazz to schools kids with programs established
in Northern California, Taiwan, and Japan so far. We are spreading the
Traditional Jazz message everywhere we go by exposing children to the real roots of
American Jazz, long considered to be America's ONLY Contribution to World
Culture.
Operated by
Ambassadors of American Culture.
a section 501 (C) (3) Charitable and Educational organization
list mate Tom Wiggins is the Executive Director.
The Ambassadors will be opening a new venue in Old Town Sacramento on Friday
evening May 27th and will present shows throughout the Jazz Jubilee featuring:
Check the posted schedule at the venue for show times and stop by in between
your other venues. Jubilee badges will of course be honored, but please be
kind enough to leave a donation, as we are not being paid by the Jubilee, and
our income is being spent directly on programs to benefit the kids who need
it the most in many of the poorest communities with no music funding at all.
The Globe Trotting Saint Gabriel's Celestial Brass Band doing their
Traditional New Orleans Funeral shows and Preservation Hall style shows.
Alternating with them will be the International Singing Sensation Zorina
London, who has flown in from Taipei, Taiwan to perform with them as well as her
own Cotton Club Style show. She is not to be missed, especially if you enjoy
the music of Billie Holiday, Bessie Smith, Lena Horne, Dinah Washington, Eartha
Kitt, or Mahalia Jackson and Josephine Baker. Come by and see a real
professional touring Jazz/Blues Star in action, she is a blessed and gifted
entertainer of the highest magnitude. She is also the Aunt and mentor of Latoya London
of recent American Idol Fame.
Backing her in the rhythm section will be Saint Gabriel's drummer Paul Smith
and Double Bass player Joe McKinley who usually plays Tuba with us.
Filling in on Tuba and Euphonium for Joe will be our good friend Buddy Apfel,
we will have the Father and Son Jazz Professor team of David Sr. & Jr. on
Trumpet, as well as Trevor Brown who has flown in from Montreal for the dates.
Dwight McQueen will hold forth on drums and Sonny Fairley and Jose Hernandez
will swap places on Alto and Soprano Saxes, James Nelson will be on Bari Sax.
and Charles Hamilton and Miguel Hernandez will be on Bones. Tom Wiggins might
even play if he can get a free moment from management duties.
Tell all your friends and stop by during the festival and see us, and make a
donation to "Jazz For Kids" they need the support and all your donations are
totally Tax deductible as well, in any amount.
Our suggested minimum donation is $5.00 per person which is very cheap
considering the International Caliber of these two great shows.
Saint Gabriel's has donated 1000 CDs and T-shirts to Jazz For Kids to offer
as premiums to the donors of $10.00 or more.
We will also be hosting a late night Jam session starting at 11:15 p.m. on
Friday Saturday and Sunday nights.
The venue can't be missed if you are going to Old Town, it is on the corner
of 2nd and K Streets upstairs on the Verandah Balcony and inside the Union
Hotel building where the main show room will be.
Beer and Wine will be available at reasonable prices and we have a decent
size venue for approximately 175 people per show.
Hope to see many of you there, pass the word and come help support a great
Jazz program, we just might be able to find and inspire the next Louis Armstrong
with our efforts.
This will be low keyed and laid back New Orleans style, we will even take you
to Church in Harlem on Sunday with a Gospel show or two. Sing and shout
along's will be welcome, and even clapping off the Beat is allowed. :))
You just can't have more fun than this with your clothes on.
Thanks,
Tom Wiggins
