Hi all,

I was reading the Guest Editorial in this week's Billboard Magazine - May
14th (not available on line without a subscription) - it was by Tim
Brooks, the author of this book:

Lost Sounds (Blacks and the Birth of the Recording Industry, 1890-1919)
published by the University of Illinois Press -
http://www.press.uillinois.edu/s04/brooks.html - looks pretty
interesting!

Anyway, the editorial was all about how US record labels have never
bothered to re-issue most of the recordings by Black musicians from before
1920. He does say that some of these recordings are available from foreign
sources, but he thinks the US rights holders should be forced into
releasing this historical material.

There is also a related long article in the same issue about "Orphan
Songs" - things that were recorded before 1972 by companies that are now
out of business.
