Gee they have some headliners, must be trying to make money on the event by
going after the yuppies with the money.
Those acts are all right dead in the mainstream of what is considered to be
JAZZ in this ERA, and most of them sell more than enough tickets at high
prices, $25.00 to $50.00 a seat at many venues. Surprisingly enough Tony Bennett's
current audience is under 35 years old, why? How? Because he went out and
marketed to them a few years back and got himself reinvented and an even better
career.
I actually remember him doing it and how he did it, He promoted a show at the
Herbst Theater in San Francisco and PAID the audience $25.00 each to attend,
when they saw and heard how fabulous he was they embraced him and bought the
Hell out of His CDs and word of mouth flowed freely building him an entirely
new HIP audience that now pays to attend all of his shows.
Now that was a brilliant piece of marketing of OKOM. It also speaks volumes
about going out and playing where the younger folks are who actually do go out
and stay out past 8:00 p.m. and spend money on live music. Not surprising
that you hear these artists on the Smooth Jazz stations either.
Cheers,
Tom Wiggins
