What I tell you three times is true:

The Alphonse Picou clarinet part in High Society is an obligato.
The Alphonse Picou clarinet part in High Society is an obligato.
The Alphonse Picou clarinet part in High Society is an obligato.

Although it is sometimes performed as a solo, it was intended to be
played over the melody.  (The melody itself is similar to the trio of
other quadrilles and marches.)  In the usual Dixieland interpretation,
the clarinet plays the obligato over a softly-played trombone melody.
