A full year in the making, "Crinoline Days" is a collection of dance
numbers
played in the unique manner of the long forgotten _Frisco Jazz Band_
(http://www.redhotjazz.com/frisco.html) , who in 1917 recorded the first
"jazz"
records to be issued on the Edison label, featuring C-melody saxophone
virtuoso
Rudy Wiedoeft. Despite the Frisco Jazz Band's name, the music they played
is
really a hybrid of ragtime and jazz, a style we of the "in" crowd like to
call "rag-a-jazz."
Acclaimed author/musician/songwriter _Ian Whitcomb_
(http://www.picklehead.com/ian.html) has provided some informative liner
notes, supplemented by
contributions from Frisco Jazz Band authority Doug Caldwell and myself.
I'm
surrounded by a stellar group of musicians - _Jenny Scheinman_
(http://jennyscheinman.com) on violin, _David Sager_
(http://davidsager.com) on trombone,
John Gill on banjo, Conal Fowkes on piano, and Kevin Dorn on drums.
"Crinoline
Days" also includes four-part barbershop harmony vocals by the Blue Amberol
Quartette - Larry Bomback, Eddie Holt, Brad Verebay, and Neal Siegal -
featured on six numbers.
Rather than being a re-creation, "Crinoline Days" features new arrangements
of popular songs from the early 1900s, including spirited fox-trots, brisk
one-steps, and dreamy, sentimental ballads. Here's a list of the tunes
(some
of these are medleys, which explains how we fit so many songs on the CD):
SMILE, SMILE, SMILE (Pack Up Your Troubles in Your Old Kit Bag)
PRETTY BABY
JUST LIKE A BUTTERFLY (That’s Caught in the Rain)
FLOATIN’ DOWN TO COTTON TOWN
MY WILD IRISH ROSE
LET IT RAIN, LET IT POUR (I’ll Be in Virginia in the Morning)
MY CASTLE IN SPAIN
ROSES OF PICARDY
GOOD-BYE BROADWAY, HELLO FRANCE!
UNDER THE BAMBOO TREE
IDA! SWEET AS APPLE CIDER
SHINE ON, HARVEST MOON
NELLIE KELLY, I LOVE YOU
IT’S A LONG, LONG WAY TO TIPPERARY
I WANT A GIRL (Just Like the Girl that Married Dear Old Dad)
SCHUBERT’S “SERENADE”
SERENADE BLUES
DOWN AMONG THE SHELTERING PALMS
MEMORIES
AT THE BALL, THAT’S ALL
IF I HAD MY WAY
A RING TO THE NAME OF ROSIE
OLD MAN SUNSHINE (Little Boy Bluebird)
MY SUNNY TENNESSEE
IN THE GOOD OLD SUMMER TIME
CANARY COTTAGE
IT’S ALWAYS ORANGE DAY IN CALIFORNIA
JAZZIN’ THE BLUES AWAY
SOME SUNNY DAY
CRINOLINE DAYS
This particular CD required a tremendous amount of research and
preparation,
but I am truly proud of the results. I hope you will enjoy listening to it
as much as we enjoyed making it.
