I played in the Mormon Tabernacle in Salt Lake City one time and they have
an echo that will kill you. The drums were coming back about a half second
late.

Subject: [Dixielandjazz] Rippling handclaps

Hello Fred

The rippling effect may well be due to the velocity of sound in air, that is
about 333 metres/sec. If the audience member is 33.3 metres away then the
sound of the band will take a tenth of a second to reach him or her and
another tenth of a second for the band members to hear the handclap. On fast
dixieland numbers (m.m.=180) this will sound as though the handclap has more
than half a beat time lag.

Cheers

Bob Smith
