Dear Arnold,
(Sorry about the delay in replying. We have been out a bit the last two
days.)
Regarding your offer of a copy of the now-deleted John Gill LP.
It just so happens that I have this LP.
But thank you for the kind offer.
I am playing it now.
But it doesn't have the lyrics to the verse we were discussing. In fact,
there is no vocal.
I know the words to first verse, as the male vocalist with our old band used
to sing it. But at the moment I can't recall what vocal records of the song
the vocal verse(s) are on.
I was going to check later today, but may as well do it now.
Of the following pre-1942 versions of "Darktown Strutters' Ball" in my
collection only the Boswell Sisters rendition has a vocal verse:
Ted Lewis (March 1927)
Jungle Kings (April 1928)
Coon-Sanders (Dec 1929)
Mound City Blue Blowers (June 1930)
Memphis Night Hawks (March 1934)
Boswell Sisters (May 1934)
Luis Russell (Aug 1934)
Tiny Bradshaw Sept 1934
Paul Whiteman July 1935
Louis Prima (Feb 1936)
Ella Fitzgerald Nov 1936
Phil Harris Feb 1936
Fats Waller Nov 1939.
It's been fun listening to them all again.
Kind regards,
Bill.
