Dear Cees,
What you did not say, and what the web site does not shout about is that The
Hoodangers is a young jazz group from Melbourne, Australia.
Alert DJMLers may recall that Melbournian lurker, Rev. Mick Potter, has
already sung their praises to the list.
Oz listmates, Phil O'Rourke and Sam Meakin also know them, and may wish to
comment.
What is great about the Hoodangers (pronounced hoo-dang-ers) is that they
(all being 20-something) understand and relate to young audiences.
And serve up jazz from Oliver and Jelly, through New Orleans to Mainstream
and Funk.
Played with great musicianship, energy and humour.
Not for everyone on the DJML, but they certainly know their jazz - and their
target audience, the kids.
The parents of several of the group are very well known, respected,
musicians on the Melbourne traditional jazz scene, so these youngsters grew
up listening to OKOM.
With the Hoodangers, jazz is not dead. It has just been updated a bit.
As Louis said to the two little songwriters on his 1931 recording of
"Lonesome Road":
More power to you boys.
Kind regards,
Bill.
