Yes, but dear ol' Sidney also created a monster.  For the 4,672,912 
French that own soprano saxes -- thus are expert players -- 93% think 
the vibrato is an integral part of the sound they are supposed to 
produce.  We've had 'jammers' sit in where their vibrato was so large, 
they could play in any key and be in tune with what we were playing.  
The notion of learning the instrument first, then adding flourishes and 
frosting has never crossed their minds.
