Hello Larry,

You asked about placing of microphones.

Most of my occasional live recording is done of a symphonic wind band, or of myself at home for critical evaluation (of myself, not the sound quality!).

The best solution I've found so far is to hang the microphones from the ceiling using cord (there should be a little slack in the microphone lead) and a small curtain wire hook (this leaves an almost invisible hole when removed). You'll also need the use of step-ladders or a sturdy chair.
