If we accept that the phonograph was "invented" by Edison, then it's
fair to say that stereophony was invented by Alan Blumlein. He produced
the earliest research and defined several microphone techniques.

It describes one of Blumlein's microphone arrangements similar to what
is now known as a Jecklin disc and a circuit that converts low frequency
phase differences into intensity differences that translate well to
loudspeakers.
