Below is a snip from a review of a jam band circuit performance in Brooklyn.
While not OKOM, the parallel about playing for the audience is striking. I
think much of today's "jazz oblivious" audience is much like the one below.
They want to dance and chat. So the music we play must accommodate that.

"The Big Summer Classic strove for a benign ambience and a communal spirit
For the audience of 4,300, it turned out cozier than a baseball stadium."

"It features middleweights of the jam-band circuit, who tour nonstop playing
music shaped by an audience that wants to dance and chat. So the music needs
to be upbeat but not overpowering. The music on Thursday enlisted
longstanding traditions - flying-fingers bluegrass for the Yonder Mountain
String Band; 1960's rock and soul for Michael Franti and Spearhead; and of
course memories of the Grateful Dead - to make heads bob."
