THE DAVE COLLETT TRIO
28 July 2005 - Clevedon Jazz Club
Like the American humorous writer, James Thurber, Dave Collett has not been a prize fighter, deep sea diver, cowpuncher, or short order cook. However, Dave is one of Bristol's finest jazz pianists and returns to the Club's regular Walton Park Hotel venue on Thursday 28 July.
Dave has played piano in several well known bands and been a pivotal member in each. During the 1950's he was a member of Acker's Paramount Jazz Band He wrote and played on Acker's 'Hit single' 'Somerset'. In 1963 he joined the Avon Cities and stayed with them 'til the end!
Dave has been singing the blues since the 1950s, and there has been a lot to sing about. Every decade has inspired some succinct or wry comments. These, matched, with his own musical accompaniment and natural laid back vocal style, makes for memorable performances.
Dave's speciality is boogie and blues, for which be has received critical acclaim. Over the years he has added his own compositions to his repertoire of jazz greats and his words and music give the listener some insight into his relaxed philosophy which comes close to being summed up in his song `I've got no reason, I just love to sing the blues'.
The Trio was formed in the early 1980's and are resident every Tuesday in Bedminster's White Horse - they are Dave on piano, Dave Hibberd on drums and Geoff Miller on string bass. Clevedon audiences have enjoyed their music on several previous occasions during Clevedon Jazz Club's Long Weekends.
The doors at Clevedon Jazz Club's Walton Park Hotel venue open at 8pm, the music starts at 8.30pm and its £5-50 'on the door'. Further details of this and all other Clevedon Jazz Club events, and Club membership - members get a substantial discount on admission charges! - are available from Trev on 0700 5806 252 or from the Club's web site at http://www.clevedonjazzclub.co.uk.
