Leonard Maltin wrote that he played piano and drums. I found another
reference to him playing jazz piano in the show he puts on with his wife (
http://www.trekortreat.com/rooney.htm ),so that would explain the excellent
faking of playing the piano.
He may have played his own drums. I have no idea if he was a good player,
though, so that's purely speculation, but apparently there are pictures
extant of Rooney playing drums at the Stagedoor Canteen during WWII.

For those who looked at/heard the Dorsey clip wasn't it interesting how well
Micket Rooney faked playing the piano? (Remember the thread about actors
faking being jazz musicians?)
I just saw another Rooney film on TV the other day about "OKOM". Can't think
of the name right now, ("Speakeasy?) but Louis Armstrong, Barney Bigard and
Jack Teagarden were also in it. This time Rooney played a drummer.
He faked playing drums pretty well also.
Cheers,
Steve Barbone
