Dear Brian,
The now common spelling "Dippermouth" is another example of later revivalist
musicians (and sometimes record companies) misspelling an original tune
title!
Discographers and researchers have always known that the composition is
"Dipper Mouth Blues" on the King Oliver Gennett (6 April 1923) and Okeh (23
June 1923) 78s and was copyrighted on 21 May 1923 the same way.
Its other name "Sugar Foot Stomp" (which King Oliver and His Dixie
Syncopators, recorded and copyrighted in May 1926) also has three words in
the original title.
As a matter of interest, the Dorsey Brothers' Decca version ( 6 Feb 1935) is
simply labelled "Dipper Mouth".
Kind regards,
Bill.
