As a product of four years of ROTC training, I must inform you that a
"gig" was a demerit given by some RA cadre trainer who found fault in
just about everywhere a fault could be found. Too many gigs and life was
no longer fun. The result was an adversion ever since for sharply
creased trousers, ironed shirts, all buttons always buttoned, and some
deliberate and purposeful scuffing of shoes. Not because I wanted to
look a little less than spiffy, but just because I now could!!
It was a wonderful feeling to later find one could get paid for getting
a gig, not doing a punishment tour.
Then I got married and the awarding of the other kjind of gigs returned
-- but with a new cadre to train me up HER way -- or the highway!!
My commanding officer and I will celebrate our 50th year of loving,
wedded combat, come November. I have few hopes of getting a good
conduct medal,
but a kiss now and then is reward enough. "sides she lets me go fishing
and bird hunting whe I want to, and that kind of R&R is pretty good duty!
Don (Gen. Jean has sounded mess call, and one must not keep her waiting)
Ingle
