The below program has been ongoing for 11 months now, since February 2005.
Amazing that a "for profit" joint takes the lead in a program like this
while the rest of us twiddle our thumbs.
How about starting up a program like this in your city? Or at your Jazz
Society, or at your Jazz Festival?

NEW YORK CITY - Jazz Standard, Danny Meyer's award-winning jazz club located
just downstairs from the barbecue restaurant Blue Smoke, continues its Jazz
for Kids series on Sundays, from 1-3:00 p.m., with the Jazz Standard Youth
Orchestra (JSYO), some of the most talented young jazz musicians in New York
City.
Every Sunday, for the past year, kids age four and up along with their
parents, have had the opportunity to learn about jazz, dance in the aisles,
and meet the musicians. Whether you're a budding jazz fan or aficionado,
there is something for both kids and parents to enjoy during this informal
program. Starting at 1:00pm, the Blue Smoke lunch menu and full bar will be
available, as well as the popular Blue Smoke kids menu.
Instead of a cover charge, the $5 donation benefits the Jazz Standard
Discovery Program, whose mission is to foster a connection between New York
City schoolchildren and the jazz art form in a hands-on manner with lasting
impact.
In addition, as part of the Jazz Standard Discovery Program, every Wednesday
afternoon in February and March, children from NYC public schools will
attend a performance at Jazz Standard featuring various professional jazz
groups from the NYC scene.
The program's resident ensemble, JSYO, is a breeding ground for talented
school-aged New York City children. Under the direction of Conductor and
Arranger David O'Rourke, the JSYO offers student musicians the opportunity
to play exciting new arrangements of big band classics.
