Satchmo: The Genius of Louis Armstrong, by Gary Giddens, is just great.
Published in 1988, I believe there's a more recent edition, from DaCapo
Press -- about 2001, I think.
There's a comprehensive-looking 10 CD Armstrong box set for $29.98 at this
