i recently bought a new red trumpet on ebay for 89 dollars (plus shipping). 
i thought to myself...."if it is even good enough to play one song on, i ll 
work it into the act, and be happy. and if not, i ll use it as a lamp or 
wall hanging."  :)

but it turned out to play great.   very even and open in all ranges, great 
valve action, and gets a lot of attention from people.  so i fully believe 
you can sometimes get a good playing horn for little money.  however, it 
probably does not have the longevity that a "better" horn might have.  only 
time will tell :)
