Dear Len:

<Why should that surprise you? Perhaps like many others do, you take what I
write out of context which distorts both the message and the answer. I can't
recalL ever having espoused a view that Festivals and Societies are "bad".>

This is a joke, right? Or do critical comments and disparaging remarks
not count in your opinion? BTW, "bad" is not a word I used.

<There was another part to my original post that was far more important than
applauding OKOM festivals and patting the Societies on the back. That of
audience.>

I think most of these people do this work solely for the love of the
music. However,I don't think you can discount the worth of a sincere pat
on the back for a job well done.

<And it is audience that drives a kid like Jamie Cullum. In 2004/5 this
young
man reached more audience, and did more for jazz, than all of the OKOM
Festivals, Trad Societies and Bands in the USA and Canada (and probably the
world) combined.>

This is a very wide reaching statement that stands as opinion unless
their are statistics to confirm it. My opinion is that it will do very
little if anything for Dixieland Jazz audiences. It may even be detrimental.

<Check out his November schedule. Hey, he has more gigs than me. :-) VBG.>

<Cheers,
Steve>

Good for Him!! I guess in future when you do an analysis of your group
and the quality of your performance and report your findings to the list
you will use Jamie Cullum as a comparative reference instead of OKOM
festivals and bands.

Len Nielsen
