Dear Luis Daniel,
"Satchmo's Syndrome" is another, and probably more common, lip aberration
which results from stretching "the circular muscle of the mouth that
contracts when puckering the lips." It was described and named by a Spanish
doctor, who repaired the ruptured fibrous gap that ensues. This was probably
Louis Armstrong's trouble, exacerbated by his self- treatment, part of which
consisted of paring away the scar tissue with a razor blade! A letter I
wrote to the "IAJRC Journal" Volume 34 No. 4, 2001 has more on this, also my
book "Jazz and Death. Medical Progfiles of Jazz Greats." Cheers.
